Mikel Azcona was perfect throughout the weekend occupying the first position in the free practice sessions, official session and first race. In the race that closed the meeting finished fourth, but a penalty of 30’’ apart him from the fourth place achieved on the track.
Free practice. Azcona, spurred by the excellent performance in the Red Bull circuit, came to Germany very focused on leaving his car’s mechanics in the best conditions for an appointment that was expected intense and disputed, and he got it.
30 ‘official practice were a continuation of what happened in the free practice sessions. The Spanish driver took the pole-position with a lap (2’07 “096) marked on his third lap.
On the first race (11 laps), Azcona followed the script provided by the PCR Sport team. Mikel made an excellent start and led him to negotiate in the first position on the first right-hander of the German track. From here, he got an excellent rate without making any kind of error.
Before the podium, Mikel Azcona made the following comment: So far, this is a fantastic weekend, as it has been proved to have excellent lap’s times and have we have recovered many points of the Championship. I suppose that tomorrow everything will be more difficult beginning the second race form the tenth position.
The second race (11 laps) was more disputed; driver’s touches were a constant from the beginning. Azcona had a very intense race. He regained positions, mid-career was sixth, up to the fourth. In the final laps, he tried to benefit from the other drivers’ battles in front of him, but eventually crossed the finish line in fourth place mentioned.
The bad news for the Spanish driver came from the Steward’s room after the race finished. A penalty of 30” for a touch with Morgan left him outside the points.
Referring to the sanction, Pep Codinach said: It is a pity, we would arrive in Barcelona with a minimum difference against our rivals to take the Championship, and are now 17 points that we must overcome. It will be very difficult but we will try until the end.
Pending the appointment Circuit Barcelona - Catalonia, Niels Langeveld (202 points) is the leader, followed by Stian Poulsen (191 points), and Mikel Azcona (185 points) in third place.
Circuit appointment in Bacelona - Catalonia will be held on 4th , 5th and 6th of November.
