Basile Lefèvre and Julie de Leeuw were the first winners in the U16 category of the 24th Borrufa Trophy. Moreover, the Belgian team managed to get another of its competitors on this category’s podium (third). Clearly, a great start of the competition for Belgium in U16. Amongst the younger skiers in the category up to 14 years old, there was more variety on the podium as far as nationalities go. Nonetheless, Italian skier Anna Momicchioli and Nicolas Pirozzi from Chile were very efficient in obtaining the victory.
A total of 250 skiers of 30 different nationalities have signed up for the Andorran event, held on the slopes of Vallnord and valid for the international ski competition for children.
As for the weather, it is worth mentioning that the Borrufa Trophy 2016 had a very positive start. The skiers and everyone else at the ski resort of Vallnord-Arcalís, more specifically in the area of Arcalís, enjoyed a sunny day with mild temperatures.
Category U16: As previously stated, the Belgian team were the clear winners of this category. As the winners, Grandjean also had a great day which placed him third on the boys podium. Amongst the girls, the Russian team had a very promising start of the Borrufa 2016. Basile Lefèvre made the following comment after he received his winning medal: I had a very good feeling on the slopes and felt very confortable with the pace from the beginning. I am extremely pleased with the victory and I hope to remain amongst the best for the rest of the competition.
His teammate De Leeuw, a bit more shy when talking to the press, had the following things to say: I’m very happy with the victory, I did not know the level of my rivals
Category U14: The youngest skiers started the Andorran trophy with the Giant Slalom. Amongst the girls, the victory was for Italian skier Anna Mimocchioli who was great on the first heat. On the second heat, the surprise came from Portuguese skier Vanina Guerillot, who was the only one under one minute, placing herself second only 3 tenth of a second behind the winner. As for the boys a clear win for Nicolás Pirozzi from Chile, who was the fastest in both heats. Italian skier Rigamonti and French skier Guillot had a spectacular fight over second place, in the first heat it was for the Italian competitor whilst on the second the Frenchman was the fastest.
Tomorrow (26th January) the events will be swapped: the category U16 will face the Giant Slalom and the U14 will go onto the Special Slalom.
